I am thrilled to share some exciting news with you all. On May 30, 2024, a significant milestone was achieved in our journey to revolutionize agriculture in Africa. ASEF International, in partnership with New Generation Nutrition (NGN) from the Netherlands and FIDAS Africa, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to train and empower 100,000 Africans in the insect value chain. This groundbreaking initiative, known as Project Waste4Meal, promises to bring transformative changes to our agricultural landscape, particularly in Nigeria.
The Vision Behind Project Waste4Meal
Project Waste4Meal is not just another agricultural program; it’s a holistic approach that integrates waste management, climate action, food security, and agricultural real estate. The focus on Black Soldier Fly farming presents a unique opportunity to address multiple challenges simultaneously. By reducing our dependency on imported animal feed, we can enhance local feed mills’ capacity and support sustainable agriculture practices.
This project aims to create 100,000 jobs across Africa, with 40,000 direct jobs in Nigeria alone. Additionally, it will generate 160,000 indirect jobs along the value chain over the next 5 to 7 years. This is not just about numbers; it’s about providing meaningful employment and empowering our youth and women with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive.

Why Insect Farming?
Insect farming, particularly with the Black Soldier Fly, is a game-changer. It is a less risky and more profitable venture compared to many traditional agricultural practices. The Black Soldier Fly larvae are rich in protein and can be used as a sustainable and cost-effective animal feed. This not only reduces the cost of livestock production but also promotes a circular economy by recycling organic waste into valuable resources.

For me personally, this MOU represents more than just a professional achievement. It is proof of resilience and the power of innovative thinking in the face of challenges. Like many entrepreneurs, my business has faced its share of ups and downs. However, this project provides a unique avenue for rebounding and redefining success.
By embracing insect farming, we are not only contributing to food security and environmental sustainability but also setting a new standard for agricultural practices in Nigeria. This initiative will undoubtedly open doors for further collaborations, investments, and advancements in the agricultural sector.
Empowering Our Future
The training programs set to spread across multiple African countries will also extend to Nigeria with a target of training 40,000 individuals. This extensive outreach, supported by ASEF’s 90% subsidy on training costs, ensures that more Africans can access and benefit from this revolutionary agricultural venture.
We are already garnering support from various stakeholders, including 9,000 religious houses, state governors, ministries, and financial institutions. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of community involvement and shared vision in driving sustainable development.
